Use Of Gamification And AI Techniques To Motivate Healthy Living Activities Amongst Children With Disabilities – MRes Scholarship

USE OF GAMIFICATION AND AI TECHNIQUES TO MOTIVATE HEALTHY LIVING ACTIVITIES AMONGST CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

Faculty of Computing Engineering and Science (FCES) at the University of South Wales

Project ID: 22388
Annual Stipend: £11.8k p.a
Application Deadline: 13th February 2022

MbyRes wedi’i gyllido yw hwn, sy’n cynnwys cyflog hael a ffioedd dysgu, gydag amgylchiadau sydd â digon o adnoddau ar gyfer ysgoloriaeth lwyddiannus. This is a funded MbyRes, including a generous stipend and tuition fees, with well-resourced circumstances for a successful scholarship.

Here is an exciting opportunity to develop technology which could lead to entirely new approaches in the use of gamification to help children with disabilities.

The selected candidate will apply their computer games development skills and ambition to create a product that will help with the management and engagement of children with their care plan. The project will allow the student to develop transferable knowledge and skills in this most exciting and active field of gamification research.

This Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS) project will be held in the Faculty Computing, Engineering and Science at the University of South Wales. KESS is a programme funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) awarded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) in the Welsh Government. The MbyRes will be associated with the Wales Institute of Digital Information.

The project is backed by Enrich My Care  https://www.enrichmycare.com)

Programme of research:

The compliance with exercises and medication plans is crucial to the prognosis of the disability. However, it is always challenging to effectively gain compliance, particularly when the child and the young person is expected to follow the management plan regularly. Furthermore, the parent and child relationship does make it harder to gain consistent cooperation from the child. Currently, the reporting of the compliance to these programs is anecdotal, based on feedback from parents and teachers. This has impacted the ability to gain precise data resulting in gaps in knowledge.

The project will develop a remote monitoring platform to helps closely monitor the child’s progress with exercises, splints and medications. The child & family would be able to track their exercise, splint and medication plans via mobile app logging them regularly to capture data and develop validation on treatment plans. Furthermore, the children and young people would be motivated to carry out the exercises regularly with gamification tools.
