‘Three Minute Thesis’ Competition
Put your project in the limelight! At this year’s KESS 2 Annual Event in The Celtic Manor Resort on the evening of 10 September 2019 we invite you to take centre stage once again and present a live Three Minute Thesis for the chance to win a KESS 2 award or two for your project! Are you up to the challenge?
The Three Minute Thesis competition is a great opportunity to:
- Publicise your project, your company collaboration and your expertise
- Test your public speaking skills and show off in front of your peers
- Challenge yourself – can you really convince those outside your area of research that your work is worthwhile, significant and interesting?
There are two awards up for grabs, the Research Presentation Award for the best 3MT of the evening and the Sustainability Award.
What is a 3MT?
A 3MT(Three Minute Thesis) is a style of presentation governed by strict rules. There are a limited number of presentation slides allowed and the slides move on automatically after an allotted time. Our Three Minute Thesis template gives you 6 slides with 30 seconds per slide. That’s 3 whole minutes to be engaging, convincing and informative about your project within the given template!
Who should enter?
The competition can be entered by one or all of the project team; student, academic supervisor, company partner or any combination of the above. Presentation entry guidelines can be found below.
What do you need to enter?
You just need to send us your 6 presentation slides and a 500 word ‘elevator pitch’ for your project.
A suggested (but not compulsory) structure for your 6 slides could be:
- Slide 1 – Question, problem, thesis
- Slide 2 – What we have done so far
- Slide 3 – What we are doing now
- Slide 4 – What we will do next
- Slide 5 – About the collaboration
- Slide 6 – The impact (on everyone involved, the economy, society…)
We would also like you to embed into your presentation how your project addresses the Well-being of Future Generations Act (2015). Further information and guidance regarding the WFGA can be found on the KESS 2 Sustainability web page and via the links listed at the bottom of this page.
Your slides can only be submitted in the KESS 2 PowerPoint Template, which is available from the Downloads section of the KESS 2 website.
Judging criteria (equally weighted)
- Innovative delivery
- Most engaging
- Best evidence of collaboration
- How it addresses the WFGA
Entries to be sent to email@example.com by 5:00pm on 23rd August 2019 with the subject heading 3MT.
Shortlisted participants will present their slides during the live final at our Annual Event in South Wales on the evening of 10th September 2019. Entrants please save the date and make sure you are available to attend the event to present your 3MT. The winning presentations will be decided by the audience, based on the above judging criteria, on the night.
We look forward to receiving your competition entries!
