Benefits of Participation in high-risk activities in the outdoors (The Business Perspective)
In the outdoors we have implied knowledge, in that we believe swimming in the outdoors for example is better for you than swimming in a pool. Working with the School of Sport, Health and Excercise Sciences at Bangor University allows Surflines to research and test those theories. We’ll be able to translate the research and inform potential about the advantages of outdoor activities.

The Authority has developed a Research Prospectus in order to help it answer some crucial questions about the Park’s changing environment and the resilience of the communities living here, and this research contributes directly to that knowledge base. The eventual publication of peer-reviewed papers for this research will help to raise the Authority’s and the Park’s profile within the field of applied ecological research. This was the first time that this Authority entered a KESS studentship with a university.
Swansea University continues to maintain a regular and helpful research presence within the National Park. The CORS project evolved from discussions on how best to achieve added value research on raised bogs whilst avoiding the sort of disturbance that can be caused by ad hoc research.

Development of a Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme for preschool children in nursery settings, and their families at home (The Business Perspective)
We got involved with KESS because we think it’s important to develop academic talent and help graduates learn about the process of bringing academic ideas to market. Academia is particularly important to us, because Food Dudes grew out of the School of Psychology at Bangor University under the leadership of the late Professor Fergus Lowe and Professor Pauline Horne. Although the programme itself had been in development for 20 years, it wasn’t until 2010-11 that Food Dudes started to become of particular interest to Public Health professionals around the UK, no doubt because of the public and media pressure to do something about the problem of obese children.
Since we span out the business in 2011/21, Food Dudes has become possibly one of the fastest growing social enterprises in the UK. That said, any support we can find for the project is warmly welcomed – hence our interest in KESS.
